About Rabindra Sadan
Rabindra Sadan is the state government's flagship auditorium, built to mark Rabindranath Tagore's birth centenary. Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation stone on 5 August 1961 and the building was completed in 1967. Its hall of about 1,200 seats has a large stage that makes it a prime address for Bengali theatre, Rabindra Sangeet evenings, dance recitals and state award ceremonies, and it is a screening venue of the Kolkata International Film Festival. It anchors a wider cultural campus that also holds Nandan, Sisir Mancha, the Paschimbanga Bangla Akademi and the Gaganendra exhibition hall. The auditorium was last renovated in 2022. Programmes change daily and many are staged by amateur and group-theatre companies.
