Art Exhibitions & Gallery Shows in Kolkata

Kolkata's art week is easy to plan because the public galleries turn over fast and cost nothing. The Academy of Fine Arts on Cathedral Road, founded in 1933, rents its galleries to artists for short runs, so there is something new almost every week. ICCR's galleries on Ho Chi Minh Sarani work the same way. The Birla Academy of Art and Culture on Southern Avenue, established in 1966, combines a museum collection with exhibitions, and the Kolkata Centre for Creativity at Anandapur shares its building with the contemporary gallery Emami Art. Private galleries such as CIMA and Experimenter in the Ballygunge area show established and experimental work. The Victoria Memorial and the Indian Museum mount larger historical exhibitions. And for five days each autumn the Durga Puja pandals become the biggest public art show in the country.
