Things to do in Esplanade & Maidan

Esplanade is the centre of the city's transport map, where the Blue and Green metro lines cross, the two surviving tram routes terminate and long-distance buses leave. The Maidan, Kolkata's vast open green, stretches south and west of it. Eden Gardens, the cricket ground established in 1864, and the 12,000-seat Netaji Indoor Stadium sit side by side at its north-western corner. Red Road is the start line for the city's big road races, and the riverfront promenade runs from Babughat to Prinsep Ghat. The Indian Museum and the nineteenth-century New Market are on the Chowringhee side. Match days and rallies bring road closures, so use the metro.
