Art gallery & theatre

The Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1933, is one of the oldest fine-arts societies in India. Its present building on Cathedral Road, beside Rabindra Sadan, came up in the 1950s through the efforts of Lady Ranu Mookerjee. The galleries cover about 6,300 square feet and are booked by painters, sculptors and photographers for short exhibitions, so the display changes almost every week. The permanent collection includes

Gallery exhibitions are usually free to walk into; theatre tickets are sold at the Academy's own counter. Shows by well-known groups sell out on weekends. Buy at the counter a day or two ahead. It is a five-minute walk from Rabindra Sadan metro.
