Things to do in Kalighat & Bhowanipore

Kalighat grew around its Kali temple, one of the most visited shrines in eastern India, and the lanes around it are busiest on Kali Puja night, Poila Boishakh and every Tuesday and Saturday. Bhowanipore, to the north, is where Kolkata's first community-funded Durga Puja was organised in 1910; its old houses now share the streets with Gujarati and Punjabi eateries and the Jadu Babu Bazar. Netaji Bhawan on Elgin Road, Subhas Chandra Bose's family home, is a museum. Pandals such as Badamtala Ashar Sangha sit a few minutes from Kalighat station. Three Blue Line stations run under the main road, so the metro is the easy way in.
