About Academy of Fine Arts
The Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1933, is one of the oldest fine-arts societies in India. Its present building on Cathedral Road, beside Rabindra Sadan, came up in the 1950s through the efforts of Lady Ranu Mookerjee. The galleries cover about 6,300 square feet and are booked by painters, sculptors and photographers for short exhibitions, so the display changes almost every week. The permanent collection includes Bengal School paintings and textiles, with works by Gaganendranath Tagore, Jamini Roy and Jogen Chowdhury. The theatre auditorium is the traditional home stage of Bengali group theatre, and the theatre company Nandikar's National Theatre Festival, started in 1984, has long been associated with it.
