Durga Puja 2026 in Kolkata: Pandal-Hopping Guide

Durga Puja 2026 in Kolkata runs from Maha Shashthi on Saturday 17 October to Bijoya Dashami on Wednesday 21 October, with Saptami on Sunday 18, Ashtami on Monday 19 and Navami on Tuesday 20 October. Mahalaya was on Saturday 10 October, and pandals have been opening to visitors since then. The festival, inscribed on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage in December 2021, turns the whole city into a walking exhibition: about 3,000 community pujas, from century-old family thakur dalans in Sovabazar to theme pandals that take months to build. This year's most-discussed installations include Sreebhumi Sporting Club's Hawa Mahal in Lake Town, Santosh Mitra Square's Vande Mataram theme near Sealdah, Ekdalia Evergreen's Somnath Temple at Gariahat and Suruchi Sangha's 'Lotus' in New Alipore. Several things are different in 2026 under the new state government: there is no post-Dashami carnival on Red Road, DJs are barred at pandals and immersions, and Ashtami is a dry day. Kolkata Metro has announced overnight Blue and Green Line services from 17 to 20 October. Good to know

  • Use the metro. From 17 to 20 October the Blue Line is scheduled to run from 1 pm to 4 am and the Green Line from 1:30 pm to about 4 am; confirm timings on Kolkata Metro's channels.
  • Do North Kolkata and South Kolkata on separate nights. Sovabazar Sutanuti and Shyambazar stations anchor the north trail; Kalighat, Jatin Das Park and Rabindra Sarobar anchor the south.
  • Go after midnight or before 9 am for the famous pandals. Evening queues at Sreebhumi, Santosh Mitra Square and Ekdalia can run past an hour.
  • Monday 19 October (Ashtami) is a dry day across the state this year, with liquor shops and bars closed.
  • Wear broken-in shoes, carry water and keep phones and wallets in front pockets; police assistance booths are set up near every large pandal.
  • For Sindoor Khela and immersion on Dashami (21 October), go to a neighbourhood or family puja in the morning; the Red Road carnival is not being held in 2026.

What are the Durga Puja 2026 dates in Kolkata?

Mahalaya was on Saturday 10 October. Shashthi is Saturday 17, Saptami Sunday 18, Ashtami Monday 19, Navami Tuesday 20 and Bijoya Dashami Wednesday 21 October 2026. Some calendars, including Kolkata Metro's festival timetable, count Panchami and Shashthi a day earlier.

Is the Red Road Durga Puja carnival happening in 2026?

No. The state government announced in September 2026 that the post-Dashami carnival on Red Road, held since 2016, would not be organised this year.

Will Kolkata Metro run all night during Durga Puja 2026?

Overnight services have been announced on the Blue and Green Lines from 17 to 20 October, running until about 4 am. On 15 and 16 October trains run 6 am to 11 pm, and on Dashami the Blue Line runs 1 pm to 10:30 pm.

Which pandals should I not miss in 2026?
