Classical Music in Kolkata: Dover Lane and the Winter Season

5 events matching right now across Kolkata โ€” mostly music (2), heritage (2), spiritual (1).

Kolkata's classical music season runs through the winter and peaks in the fourth week of January with the Dover Lane Music Conference, held at Nazrul Mancha, the 2,400-seat auditorium at Rabindra Sarobar. The conference is known for sessions that run through the night, with vocal, sitar, sarod and violin recitals by leading Hindustani and Carnatic artists; in recent years it has started around 22 January and run for four or five nights. Dates and the artist list for 2027 had not been announced when this was written. December brings the Swara Samrat Festival, a four-day festival of classical music and dance, and through the cooler months music circles, the Ramakrishna Mission Institute of Culture at Golpark, G.D. Birla Sabhagar, ICCR and Rabindra Sadan host recitals several times a week. Smaller baithaks in homes and cafรฉs seat the audience on the floor a few feet from the performer. Many recitals by younger artists are free or cost very little, and season tickets for the big conferences go on sale a few weeks ahead. This page lists Hindustani and Carnatic concerts, Rabindra Sangeet evenings, classical dance recitals and music festivals across Kolkata.

  • All-night sessions end around dawn. Carry a shawl, and arrange a cab or wait for the first metro.
  • Nazrul Mancha is about 2 km from Kalighat and Rabindra Sarobar metro stations; take an auto.
  • Keep phones silent and avoid walking in or out during an alaap; ushers usually hold latecomers at the door.
  • Free recitals by younger performers at ICCR and the Golpark institute are a good way to start.
