About Belur Math
Belur Math is the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, on the west bank of the Hooghly in Howrah district. Swami Vivekananda established it on 9 December 1898, and the 40-acre campus now holds temples to Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Vivekananda, a museum and the monastery itself. The main Sri Ramakrishna Temple, consecrated on 14 January 1938, was designed to draw on the architecture of several faiths. The Math's Durga Puja, with Kumari Puja on Ashtami, is one of the most-watched in Bengal, and the birth anniversaries of Ramakrishna, Sarada Devi and Vivekananda are major public days. The evening arati is open to all, and entry is free.
