About Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden
The Indian Botanic Garden at Shibpur is one of the oldest botanic gardens in South Asia. The East India Company authorised it in July 1787 on a site chosen by Colonel Robert Kyd, and it is now managed by the Botanical Survey of India. The garden covers 109 hectares on the Howrah bank of the Hooghly and holds more than 12,000 specimens. Its landmark is the Great Banyan, a single tree whose canopy measures more than 330 metres around and which looks like a small forest. Avenues of palms, lakes with giant water lilies and long shaded paths make it a place for birdwatching, photography walks, nature trails and unhurried winter picnics.
