About Jorasanko Thakur Bari
Jorasanko Thakur Bari is the ancestral home of the Tagore family in North Kolkata, built in 1784 by Nilmoni Thakur. Rabindranath Tagore was born in this house and died here. The state government set up Rabindra Bharati University on the premises to mark his birth centenary, and the house itself was restored as the Rabindra Bharati Museum, with rooms kept as the family used them and galleries on the Bengal Renaissance and the Brahmo Samaj. Photography is not allowed inside. The courtyard is the city's main gathering place on Pochishe Boishakh, Tagore's birth anniversary in early May, and on Baishe Srabon, his death anniversary in August, when songs and recitations go on from early morning.
