About Nazrul Tirtha
Nazrul Tirtha is a cultural centre in Action Area I of New Town dedicated to the poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, inaugurated on 24 May 2014 to mark his 115th birth anniversary. The exposed-concrete building, designed by the architect Abin Chaudhuri around a central courtyard, carries the words 'Unnata mama shir' from Nazrul's poem Bidrohi on its gate block. It has screened films since August 2015 and became a venue of the Kolkata International Film Festival that November; it now works partly as a cinema and partly as an open-air theatre and gallery for exhibitions and performances. It is about 2.5 km from its sister centre, Rabindra Tirtha.
