About Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (Salt Lake Stadium)
Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, universally called Salt Lake Stadium, is the largest football stadium in the country. It was inaugurated in January 1984 because the Maidan club grounds, holding about 20,000 each, had become too small for Kolkata's football crowds. It once held 120,000; bucket seats cut that to 85,000 in 2011 and the renovation for the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup, whose final was played here, brought it to about 68,000. Mohun Bagan and East Bengal both use it as a home ground, so it stages the Kolkata Derby. Lionel Messi played here for Argentina in 2011, and Oliver Kahn's farewell match for Bayern Munich was held here.
