About Alipore Museum
The Alipore Museum occupies the former Alipore Central Jail, which held political prisoners under British rule and stopped working as a prison on 20 February 2019. The site was then developed into a museum of the freedom movement. Sri Aurobindo was held here in 1908–09 after the Alipore bomb case, and Subhas Chandra Bose and Jawaharlal Nehru were among its other inmates, and the preserved cells are part of the visit. Its lawns have become the city's literary-festival ground: the Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival was held here for the first time from 9 to 11 January 2026, and the Kolkata Literary Meet followed from 22 to 26 January 2026.
