About Girish Mancha

Girish Mancha is the state-run theatre of North Kolkata, in Bagbazar, named after Girish Chandra Ghosh, the actor-playwright who shaped the Bengali public stage. Chief Minister Jyoti Basu inaugurated it on 1 July 1986. The Public Works Department designed the building and maintains it, and the Information and Cultural Affairs Department administers it. It is one of the most active playhouses in the city, used regularly by Kolkata's group-theatre companies, who stage Bengali plays here through the week. It is the natural stop for a play if you are already on a north-side heritage or pandal walk.
