Things to do in North Kolkata

North Kolkata is the old Bengali city of narrow lanes, family mansions and sweet shops, and it is where the commercial Bengali stage began. The Star Theatre in Hatibagan, built in 1883 and renamed Binodini Theatre in 2024, the Minerva on Beadon Street and the state-run Girish Mancha in Bagbazar still stage plays. Hatibagan market is the pre-festival shopping street, and Bagbazar Sarbojanin, Kashi Bose Lane, Chaltabagan and Tala Prattoy are fixtures of every north-side pandal trail. The Blue Line runs under the main road with stations at Shyambazar and Sovabazar Sutanuti, and one of the two remaining tram routes links Shyambazar with Esplanade.
