About Mahajati Sadan
Mahajati Sadan is a historic auditorium on Chittaranjan Avenue in north-central Kolkata. Rabindranath Tagore laid its foundation stone on 19 August 1939 at the request of Subhas Chandra Bose, and called it the 'House of the Nation'. Work stopped after Bose left India, and the building was finished only after Independence, when Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy pushed through the Mahajati Sadan Act of 1949 to complete it. Today the hall is used regularly for Bengali theatre, classical and folk music conferences, commemorations and political meetings, and seminars are held in its separate seminar hall. It stands almost on top of Mahatma Gandhi Road metro station.
