About Nandan

Nandan is the West Bengal government's film and cultural centre, built to encourage film appreciation. Jyoti Basu laid its foundation stone in 1980 and Satyajit Ray inaugurated it on 2 September 1985; Ray also designed its logo. It began with two auditoriums and later added a third. Nandan has been the main centre of the Kolkata International Film Festival since the festival started in 1995, and it screens new Bengali releases, restored classics, retrospectives and festival packages through the year. The first preparatory meeting for the 32nd festival, scheduled for 16 to 23 December 2026, was held here. The forecourt is one of the city's best-known meeting spots for students, film-makers and theatre people.
