About St Paul's Cathedral
St Paul's Cathedral is the seat of the Diocese of Calcutta and the largest church in the city. Its cornerstone was laid on 8 October 1839 and the building was completed in 1847, in a Gothic Revival style with a tower and spire modelled on Norwich Cathedral; the spire rises 201 feet. The nave can hold between 800 and 1,000 people. The cathedral is open to visitors of all faiths outside service times and stands in a garden between the Victoria Memorial and the Birla Planetarium. Christmas is its busiest season: carol services run through December, and the midnight service on 24 December draws a queue that winds along Cathedral Road.
