About Star Theatre (Binodini Theatre)

The Star Theatre in Hatibagan dates from 1883 and, with the Minerva, was one of the first homes of commercial Bengali theatre. It began on Beadon Street and later moved to Cornwallis Street, now Bidhan Sarani; Girish Chandra Ghosh produced plays here in the 1880s, and some of Bengal's earliest motion pictures, by Hiralal Sen, were screened here. A fire destroyed the old hall, and the municipal corporation rebuilt it with the heritage facade and a modern interior. In 2024 it was renamed Binodini Theatre after the actress Binodini Dasi. It now runs mainly as a cinema, with plays on a few days a month and many more in December and January.

Parking: Underground car park on site
