About Victoria Memorial
The Victoria Memorial is the white marble monument at the southern end of the Maidan, built between 1906 and 1921 in memory of Queen Victoria and designed by William Emerson in the Indo-Saracenic style. It is now a museum under the Union Ministry of Culture, set in 64 acres of gardens. The galleries are open from 10 am to 6 pm and closed on Mondays and listed national holidays, while the gardens open at 6 am every day and are a favourite with morning walkers; both are ticketed. The grounds have also served as an event venue: the Kolkata Literary Meet held its sessions here in earlier years, including January 2024.
